Legacy of the Stars

The ship continued to fall toward the distant sun, the probes returning to report no suitable worlds among the satellites of the gas giant. Some possessed atmospheres, but they were frozen; otherwise they were lifeless, offering neither invitation nor temptation.
They passed the innermost of the giants, crossed an asteroid belt, seeing the visible results of a disaster like the one that destroyed their home. The fourth planet came near, was discovered to be almost waterless and scoured by terrible windstorms. A station could be established on the surface, but it would always need to be supplied from the outside. There could be no colony.
Then the probes came back from the third planet, reporting paradise…
